The $100M Question: Who Will Be Cadillac’s F1 Title Sponsor?

As of now, Tommy Hilfiger is Cadillac’s only partner, but fresh off a driver announcement earlier in the week, they are primed to start announcing sponsors, some of which come as an unofficial “bundle deal” with the drivers. Sergio “Checo” Perez is famously backed by telecommunications giant Telmex, which has reportedly given Red Bull Racing ~$130m since he started on the team in 2021.
But will the team take on a title partner, and if so, 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒊𝒕 𝒃𝒆?
The opportunity for brands is gold. Let’s breakdown why:
🇺🇲 𝐂𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐜 𝐢𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐭𝐞𝐝𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦. Not 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 the only American team on the grid, they are leaning into their heritage much more than Haas, as evidenced by their content and press – the image for the partnership announcement with Tommy Hilfiger is literally an American flag.
🛞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐨 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐬. The experience of these drivers extends to off the track – these are seasoned professionals who have been in F1 for a combined 26 seasons. They know how to work with partners, and from a brand perspective, you know what you’re getting from an ambassador (plus their massive audience after being in the sport for so long).
💰 𝐀 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐚 1 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐩. McLaren x Mastercard title sponsorship is reportedly $100m annually. While a brand-new F1 team doesn’t command the same budget as McLaren, the price tag will absolutely be prohibitive for most brands.
So where does that leave us? What brands are primed to capitalize on this opportunity?
My take: Anheuser-Busch🍺 Why?
🌎 Anheuser-Busch is one of, if not THE, most 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝s, strengthening Cadillac’s commitment to staying true to their American heritage. The opportunity Cadillac offers is an American market where the sport is growing rapidly with a younger audience – a real opportunity for brands to speak to a must-win consumer cohort at scale.
📂 Partnering with Cadillac at the organization level instead of with one of their brands provides a massive opportunity for AB to leverage their 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨. While being anchored in the US, AB would benefit massively from the global reach that F1 provides as they compete for market share outside of the US. For example, AB owns Grupo Modelo S.A. de C.V. which fits nicely with Checo’s audience, as well as global brand Bud Light which can speak to the wider F1 audience.
🤺 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐅1. The alcohol space is very competitive, and AB would not be the first beer brand in F1. European powerhouses The HEINEKEN Company, Birra Peroni, and Estrella Galicia have a significant presence in F1, including Heineken’s multi-year partnership with Formula 1 – which locks any other beer brand out of a league-level partnership.
📖 Anheuser-Busch has experience in F1. Last year, AB-owned brand Michelob ULTRA (hyperlink) dipped their toes into Formula 1, partnering with Williams Racing and their American driver Logan Sargeant, before his mid-season dismissal. They had one of the most creative and well-received PR stunts from the entire ‘24 season, using AI and AR to bring legendary Williams drivers from past decades on track to race against Sargeant in a battle they called the Lap of Legends.
Ultimately, the decision to bring on a title sponsor is one that might feel premature for a rookie team, but one that I feel will benefit team and sponsor equally.
For potential sponsors, the opportunity Cadillac F1 presents is not just a badge slap or C-Suite hospitality. It’s a rare opportunity for a brand to put a flag in the ground at the base level with an American icon who has demonstrated long term vision for what they are building.
