Where People Actually Get Their News Now
16 July 2026

For the first time, social media and video platforms are the most-used source of news in the world. That's the headline finding from the Reuters Institute's 2026 Digital News Report, which surveyed nearly 100,000 people across 48 countries. Social and video platforms reached 54% usage for news, edging out publisher websites and apps at 51% and television at 52%.
Five years ago, only 22% of people named social media or video as their main source of news. That figure is now 30% globally, and among 18-to-24-year-olds it's 52%. This isn't a niche behaviour anymore. It's the default.
